Tad Fane Resort
Sustainability
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Sustainable Tourism through employment, education and environmental preservation.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Tad Fane Resort endeavours to conform to ecotourism standards, defined by the International Ecotourism Society as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people." Tad Fane basis its practices on this for its operations including employment and communication with surrounding villages.
The Tad Fane Resort owners and management source all staff locally as they understand that tourism provides essential jobs, education, skills and livelihood to local people. Through employment in tourism, other means of income through less sustainable practices such as hunting, small-scale logging and other activities that harm the fragile ecosystem of Dong Hua Sao forest where Tad Fane Resort is located, are generated for the local people that the resort employs.
To encourage locals to abandon such activities, Tad Fane educates the locals that these activities are undesirable and unsustainable and gives them an incentive by being able to sell their produce and handicrafts at the resort if they promise to stop hunting. Hunting has put substantial pressure on mammals in the forest and therefore they are not commonly seen except when exploring deep into Dong Hua Sao. Birds have started to return to the safe area around Tad Fane Resort and can be heard and viewed by guests.
In order to protect the environment in as many ways as possible, and to reduce the resorts impact on the environment, all bungalows are designed to make the most of the higher altitude, cooler, year-round temperatures. Therefore no room has a fan or air conditioner installed as these are unnecessary appliances and hence reduces energy consumption.
